Melbourne’s west has long borne the brunt of the State’s industrial, waste storage and transport needs. Our communities have been disproportionately affected by soil contamination, pollution and impacts on the environment.

Brimbank and Melton believe now is the time to address these issues through a region-wide approach to environmental equity. .

This begins with stopping the soil going to Ravenhall.

While Melton and Brimbank Councils want the Westgate Tunnel built so that residents can access work, education and health services quickly, we are jointly opposed to contaminated soil from the project being dumped in Ravenhall.

The decision to locate contaminated soil at Ravenhall is out of the hands of either Council however we can lobby the Victorian Government to make the right choice in how they handle the soil from the Westgate Tunnel.

Melton and Brimbank Councils want families and employees to live and work in a safe environment. That’s why we have decided to jointly urge the State Government and Transurban not to send contaminated soil to Ravenhall.

Ravenhall is located in one of the largest growth corridors in Australia. The City of Melton is around 23 kilometres from the CBD with a population projected to grow from 173,072 residents in 2019 to approximately 397,547 by 2041, and ultimately over 500,000. 
Brimbank City Council is 12 kms from Melbourne CBD and identified as a state significant priority precinct with a population size of 209,523 in 2019 and a projected growth to 230,187 by 2041.

These two council areas are significant destinations for major commercial and residential investment in the next 20 years.
 
I want an area where local residents and people who work locally can be safe. While the Westgate Tunnel is an important project, no unsafe levels of contaminated soil should be located at Ravenhall. The proposal by Cleanaway to store contaminated soil at Ravenhall should not be accepted. Ravenhall is adjacent to established residential areas and in a significant growth area. This is also an area set for major industrial and commercial investment that will create long term employment opportunities for our community

I request that:
·  no unsafe levels of contaminated soil is sent to Ravenhall
·  frequent and in-depth reporting on soil testing is undertaken
·  there is ongoing community engagement to ensure the community is informed and can have their say

For too long Melbourne’s west has been the dumping ground for the State’s industrial, waste storage and transport needs. Our communities have been disproportionality affected by soil contamination, pollution and impacts on the environment.
